Looking to Get Organized? How to Clean Up Your Server Room

Have you ever been faced with stepping into your company’s server room, finding yourself cringing at the mess, and quickly shutting the door to prevent yourself from having to look at it?  If that is the case, know you are not alone. Widely considered notorious for being unsightly and disorganized, there is a case for taking the time to ensure your server room is well-organized—and it can benefit your business (and hardware) in multiple ways.

Here at Connectivity, we regularly work with our clients to confirm that their server room is not just appealing to the eyes, but also functions correctly. After all, it shouldn’t be surprising to learn that cables that are tangled and jumbled can slow connectivity…and also make maintenance and repairs that much more challenging.

Consider the following tips for cleaning up your server room:

  • Make sure everything has a “home.” It’s likely that you take pride in having an office space that offers flow—everything has a place and employees easily know where to find certain supplies and resources. The same should hold true for a server room. For instance, use server racks designed to hold electronic equipment. This allows you to rid the floor of clutter as well as free up space on tables. Plus, when you use a server rack, your servers will be held in a secure and sturdy place—and will make it easier when you have to perform regular maintenance or troubleshoot an issue.

  • Ensure your cables are organized. Simply put, cables that have no rhyme or reason create major headaches.  Cables should be bundled with Velcro or a binding adhesive and labeled so you can identify where they are coming from and going to. Making sure you have a cable management strategy in place is a major first step to server room organization.

  • Pay attention to the temperature. Once you have your server room and cables organized, you will want to ensure that the temperature is consistently moderated and regulated. Your server room houses some important equipment that your business and employees rely upon—and if there is a risk of servers overheating in a small space, your company might be forced to face downtime, loss of productivity, miss deadlines, and a reduction in profitability and customer confidence.

  • Keep it clean. Finally, it is important to have a cleaning and dusting schedule for your server room. When dust and dirt get inside equipment, damage can be experienced, which you guessed it…leads to more downtime and chaos.
